私が12歳の時、突如、モスクワから葉書が届き、祖母は生きていて、しかもオーストリアに向かっているとのこと。この時まで、祖母の存在は私にとってゴーストのようなものだったので、思わずワクワクしてしまいました。

祖母の体験を通じて、日本の皆さまにウクライナの歴史が身近になることを願っています。この広大な国が何世紀にも渡って、どれだけの多様な異なる人々、宗教、習慣、言語によってつくられて来たかをお伝えしたいと思います。私たち一族は三世代にわたり、この人種の混じりあう渦の一部だったのです。

私の家族は大勢の何千もの他の家族同様、すべてを失いましたが、ファイティング・スピリットと誇りだけは持ち続けたのです。この祖母の不屈のスピリットがウクライナの人々を触発し、その不屈のスピリットが失われることのないことを願っています。私の家族の物語をどうぞお楽しみください！

I was 12 years old when a postcard arrived from Moscow saying that my grandmother was alive and on her way to Austria. Until then, she was like a ghost to me, which was quite exciting.

Through my grandmother's story I want to bring the history of Ukraine closer to you, show how this huge nation was formed from different people, religions, customs and languages over centuries. For three generations, my family was part of this melting pot of people.

My family, like thousands of families now, has lost everything, but the fighting spirit and pride remained and so I hope that this spirit of my grandmother will inspire and never leave the Ukrainian people. Enjoy my family drama!
