Sarny

Sarny is the concluding novel to Nightjohn, a Newbery Honor–winning story in which an enslaved girl learns to read and write from a man who risks everything to teach others. In this second and final volume, Sarny becomes a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a free Black American, carrying literacy throughout her life. Told from one person’s perspective, the story reflects on what reading and writing mean across a lifetime shaped by slavery, survival, and change. This edition features cover art by Jerry Pinkney, a Caldecott Medal–winning illustrator.
